As part of their GCSE syllabus on world history in the 20th century, our Year 11 History classes have just visited the Holocaust Gallery at the Imperial War Museum. As part of their visit, they were encouraged to think about the question of how and why the Holocaust took place, explore exhibits in detail and engage with the artefacts on display.
The gallery includes images of Jewish life before the Holocaust and then takes pupils through the journey of persecution from the rise of the Nazis to power and escalation of violence, including the Pogrom (Kristallnacht) in 1938 and on through the deadly atrocities of WW2, displaying personal items from Jewish victims at the concentration camps.
The visit concluded with a short stop by the section of the Berlin Wall on display outside the museum as they are soon to begin their learning of Superpower Relations and the Cold War.
