Our lucky Year 12 students in 3D Design, Textiles and Art have just enjoyed a masterclass with leading goldsmith and stone setter, Paul Ravn.
They explored a range of metalworking techniques as they made pendant necklaces. The students prepared sterling silver, then sawed, filed and soldered it into several intricate parts. This was the latest in our ongoing series where sixth form pupils meet different designers and makers. Paul showed some of his work and shared stories from his 60 years’ experience, including making jewellery worn by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and hand-engraving a drum kit for 1970s rock royalty. Students also enjoyed seeing work by Paul’s wife Tamiko who specialises in Japanese enamel work.
Mr Orchardson, Head of 3D Design, said: “Our students benefitted from a truly immersive experience, gaining real insights from a master craftsman of using a range of materials. Blended with insights and anecdotes, the masterclass really brought alive their new skills.”
