Co-curricular activities throughout the Autumn term

Pupils at Thames Christian School have spent the last 5 weeks getting stuck into the first Friday afternoon activities of the autumn term. These Friday activities give all our pupils the opportunity to learn new things and try activities they might not normally gravitate to, learning new skills along the way. Year groups have taken part in these activities in their form groups and will now switch to the next activity after half term. These Friday activities sit alongside our co-curricular activities that we offer through the week.

Friday Activities

So far this term, Year 7s have been enjoying their lessons in either Illustration, Chess or Baking. In Baking, the young bakers have donned their aprons and have made scones with homemade jam, shortbread, muffins, brownies and cupcakes. Chess club enables our Year 7s to not only enjoy playing the game, but also to develop their strategic thinking. In illustration Year 7s have been playing with different techniques such as collage to make posters and other illustrations.

Year 8s have taken part in the London Explorers club or Technology Bugs club. We have a little ‘feature’ written about the London Explorers club earlier in the year, read more about what they have been up to here.

Year 9s have been exploring the wonders of nature in dissecting by looking at various plants, organs and small animals to study their anatomical structure. In Science & Art the lava has been flowing as pupils have spent several weeks constructing a volcano base from papier mâché, painting and then exploding these volcanos! Other clubs for Year 9 include Electronics.

Learning about either Google and AI or Ancient Greek Civilization & Culture, our Year 10s have been focusing on how to research, evaluate and review sources, examine and present findings, and the tools that can be used. A very important training as they go into the GCSE curriculum and prepare for their  examinations in Year 11.

For our year 11s, to sit alongside their GCSE learning and revision classes they have enjoyed either football or netball as an extra sport activity to get their bodies working alongside their minds.

Pupils have also been able to sign up for Musical Theatre with our LAMDA teacher and school show director, Mrs Smith, and our Music Teacher and Head of Co-Curricular, Mr Hill, to rehearse excerpts from High School Music for a performance at our Performing Arts Evening on Thursday 5 November.

Alongside this, we are also running a mini Youth Alpha with Mr Burnett & Miss Hunor. This is a space in which pupils can choose to ask questions of their faith and also to learn more if they are interested.
