Visual Arts

The visual arts curriculum at Thames is underpinned by a focus on the development of creative thinking and problem solving as well as learning foundational skills.

In Art pupils utilise a wide range of media including silkscreen, acrylic and oil paints, ceramics and lino-cutting. They can choose Art and Graphic Communication at GCSE. Pupils’ experience is enhanced by tuition from a professional ceramicist, leading graphic designer and a recognised artist and a fashion designer.

In Design Technology which includes woodwork and fashion & textiles, pupils learn skills in practical woodworking, surface pattern design and computer aided design. They also gain a greater awareness of the work of influential designers and design movements.

Trips to galleries and print studios as well as visits by contemporary designers broaden pupils’ understanding of the subject and employment opportunities thereafter. The Art facility is equipped with Macbooks installed with Adobe Creative Suite enabling pupils to work with Photoshop and Illustrator from Year 7 upwards.
