Challenging ageist misconceptions

Over the past two months, 10 Thames pupils worked with eight elderly members of the local community, using art and photography to challenge age stereotypes. The project was directed by visiting artists Sam Haynes and Alejandra Carles-Tolra and aimed to address prejudices and misconceptions between different generations. Over seven workshops Thames pupils and elders confronted ageist attitudes, getting to know each other through the creative process. One group considered why the elderly can sometimes think that teenagers are lazy instead of considering whether they are thinking, tired or even shy. Art and photography was used to try and challenge those misconceptions. At the closing celebration participants and members of the community came together to view the displayed artwork and share concluding thoughts.
